To celebrate the 750th anniversary of the signing of the Stockport Market Charter, the latest exhibition at Stockport Story Museum explores the ways in which the market has evolved over the centuries to meet the constantly changing needs of its customers. This includes the types of goods sold, shopping habits and the colourful sights and sounds of the Market Place. This is coupled with an in-depth exploration into the building of the Covered Market Hall; how this came to be and why. The results of which depict a snapshot of market life over the last 200 years, as its history is recounted using a variety of intriguing objects, photographs and oral histories from traders past and present.
Youth Culture Stockport. - a group of young people who are actively participating in cultural activities in the borough - will also showcase their short film about the hustle and bustle of a modern market including the highs, lows and aspirations of those who work and shop there.
A special audio tour is being created to mark the 750th Anniversary. Discover the extensive history of the Market, from the granting of its charter - to the sights, sounds and smells of medieval Stockport, through to the turbulent political meetings of the 1800s.
